On March 31, we gathered changemakers, community leaders, and visionaries for our latest DRIVE Innovation Event, where we explored the powerful concept of a solidarity economy, a race-conscious community-rooted approach to economic development that prioritizes people over profit.

The event brought together voices from across Fresno and beyond who are actively working to redefine wealth, ownership, and sustainability through models centered on cooperation, equity, and mutual aid. Drs. Benner and Pastor emphasized the importance of uncovering our history of racial prejudice and critically reflected on how this history has marred social and economic opportunities today. Attendees heard from thought leaders and grassroots organizers who are building community land trusts, worker-owned cooperatives, and local investment strategies that are shifting power and resources into the hands of everyday people.

We were reminded that innovation doesn’t always mean new technology; it can also mean reclaiming and reimagining old traditions of collective care and shared abundance. From neighborhood-based solutions to regional-scale initiatives, this event was a powerful step toward shaping an inclusive economy that works for all.
Together, we’re building the foundation for a more just and resilient Central Valley, where solidarity, not scarcity, leads the way.
Thank you to everyone who joined us, shared space, and contributed to the conversation. Stay tuned for upcoming DRIVE Innovation Events as we continue to push boundaries and build community power.
