The Power of Social Capital: A Timely Conversation Ahead of the Join or Die Event

Social Capital is defined as the networks of relationships among people who live and work in a particular society, enabling that society to function effectively. So, it is who we have around us consistently that we do life with, be it personally, professionally, or socially. Research shows that when we have a strong network of diverse people in our networks, we as individuals thrive more, we have more opportunities opened to us, and we tend to have better health outcomes.

How do we develop these healthy networks? Why do some people have stronger networks than others? What else does research tell us about having high social networks? Those are questions we’ll be diving into at the event on May 6, when we show segments of Join or Die, a documentary on the research from Robert Putnam over the years. Putnam served as a consultant to U.S. Presidents, spoke to Congress, and wrote several books on the value of social capital and the value of being in community with others.

In the definition shared earlier, you’ll notice that one of the outcomes of individual social capital is that society is also in a better place. How does that work? At the event, we’ll also talk about how this aligns with DRIVE’s vision of not only having an inclusive, vibrant economy but also a community that has social cohesion, which is the degree of solidarity, unity, and social bonds within a community. Social cohesion brings a sense of belonging, trust, and cooperation among individuals and groups, contributing to social stability and well-being.

As you read our summary on Solidarity Economics and this preview for our gathering on May 6, you may notice a theme, a movement of connecting people through a place and issue-based framework. We are linking people with purpose. We are hopefully bringing clarity to how our community residents can be the change in our local economy, our systems, and decision-making that they collectively seek. This is all part of DRIVE’s vision to have families, neighborhoods, and a city that benefits from a thriving economy.

Join us on May 6 as we continue our conversation and ongoing actions that lead us to that long-term vision.
